Stay Warm: 9 Cruelty-Free Winter Jackets!

December 13, 2014

If it’s one thing I like about the winter, it’s the opportunity to wear really warm, cute, cozy jackets.  I particularly love a good jacket because I can leave the house to run a quick errand dressed like a schlub, but look pretty presentable with a cute coat… No one has to know that I’m sporting sweatpants and a grubby sweatshirt underneath!

Outwear has come a long way. Gone are the days of being forced to look like a massive puff-ball monster just to stay warm – the wonders of technology provide insulation and warmth without the bulk.

Unfortunately, you’ll notice a lot of brands using down, fur, wool, and other animal products in their jackets.  Not only is this completely unnecessary, it’s also quite cruel. Take, for example, the down industry. Did you know the majority of the worlds down supply comes from geese that have been PLUCKED ALIVE. Take a second, think for a moment and consider whether buying that down jacket is worth it after all.  If you disagree with inflicting unnecessary pain and suffering on sentient beings, then the answer is obvious: buy something with synthetic fillers.

I’ve put together my top 9 picks {because 3 is a magic number and 3 X 3 is 9} of this seasons cutest, warmest, and most stylish winter jackets. As always, each jacket is free of down, wool, leather, or any other animal product. Also, many of these styles are running promotions for the holiday – sooo, if you still need a gift consider one of these!

1. Delorean Jacket | Roxy

Super functional, water resistant outerwear jacket with all sorts of bells-and-whistles: hidden adjustable hood, venting system, finger warmers, etc. etc.

2. Parima Jacket | Roxy

Functional water resistant outerwear jacket with adjustable hood.  Roxy does jackets really well.

3. Prairie Dawn Jacket | Patagonia

Work-wear inspired jacket in 8 oz organic cotton canvas with a polyester fleece lined hood.

I’m loving this jacket in the other color:

4. Vosque 3-in-1 Parka | Patagonia

I’m diggin’ the “tweedish” look of this nylon/polyester jacket. It comes with a zip-out liner that is insulated with 90% recycled materials. Wear the shell and liner together, or separately.  Comes in additional colors. Here’s an image with the liner.

5. Field Parka | Madewell {sale!}

You’ve probably noticed a theme among my various fashion posts: I am heavily influenced by New England style – I really can’t help it – so this jacket is a no-brainer for me. Cotton-nylon parka with a faux-fur , removable half-lining. The cinchable waist makes for a sleeker, more lady-like silhouette!  ** HOT TIP ** Spend $300 at Madewell and receive 30% off ( this jacket is priced at $328), or get 20% off $100. 6. Hazelton Parka | Penfield

I own this jacket and love-love-love it. It’s super toasty without the bulk. The removable snorkel hood makes it more wearable year-round.

7. Road Trip Jacket | Roxy

I also have this jacket {picture in featured image for this post } . This is another very warm, slender jacket, with a cinchable waist. It’s lined with cotton fleece and has a removable faux-fur trim on the hood.

8. Faux-Fur Leopard Print Coat | Asos

Aaaaaand I have this coat, too! I think faux-fur can be really fun, especially when I’m gettin’ all dressed up for a night out.  This one is super duper cozy and the over-sized collar is great for staying warm on chilly nights.

9. Faux-Fur Hooded Jacket | Monki | Available at ASOS

A bit of a tamer option for someone who wants to wear faux-fur, but doesn’t really want to wear a loud print. I think the fuzzy hood is a nice bonus!

Here I am in a couple of the jackets:
